Modernized a design system site

Pearson, 2019

During Pearson’s digital transformation from book publishing to digital education software, I co-launched a new design system site to help align the UX design team.

A newly formed UX design team had created a framework site, but the site didn’t have any guidelines for how to use the downloadable Sketch components.

Problem

Solution

As part of a 3-member team, I led the content effort to create a sitemap and guidelines for a new design system site that also included guidelines for UX writing.

Result

Within 6 months, the new design system was live and the UX team had foundational guidelines for creating consistent designs.

Impact

Customers began seeing more consistent products, making it easier for them to trust Pearson as they made the transition from books to digital.

Lesson learned

After the initial glow of creating the design system, it was difficult to get all teams to use it. This was a glimpse into what I would later learn is an industry-wide problem.
